Taking to the road for the first time in 2016, Lourdes set a new school record for goals in a match on Thursday afternoon in Berrien Springs, Mich., defeating Andrews 9-1.
Â
Lourdes controlled play from the start, outshooting the Cardinals 16-3 over the opening 45 minutes. The Gray Wolves put 13 of the 16 shot attempts on frame, with Andrews' goalkeeper Christian Gutierrez keeping the Cardinals in the match.
Â
"Andrews played hard for 90 minutes," head coach
Barry Spitzer said after the match. "Their goalkeeper played really well, especially in the first half. We started getting in rhythm in the second half, moved the ball well, and created opportunities. We were able to give a lot of guys minutes tonight."
Â
Judah Goodridge (Brooklyn, N.Y./Dutchtown H.S.) finally put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard 14:16 into the contest. He took a cross from
Isamnia Cohen (Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica/Manchester H.S.) from the left and tallied his third goal of the season.
Â
Jake Kirchoff-Sleet (Tamworth, England/Queen Elizabeth's Mercian H.S.) started a combination play less than four minutes later, finding Cohen in the box who again delivered to Goodridge, giving Lourdes a 2-0 lead.
Â
Josh Patta (Wolfsburg, Germany/Signal Mountain [Tenn.] H.S.) made it 3-0 Gray Wolves with just 1:22 to play before intermission, taking a long pass from
Orlando Gomez (Hialeah, Fla./American H.S.) who sent the ball into the box from the other side of midfield.
Â
Less than nine minutes into the second half Cohen scored his first goal at Lourdes, spinning and firing from the top of the box.Â
Osmar Sequeira (Hialeah, Fla./American H.S.) tallied the assist on the fourth goal, which bettered the old school mark for goals in a match.
Â
Sequeira joined the scoring with 26:40 to play, sliding the ball past Gutierrez after taking a through ball from Patta.
Â
After Andrews scored on a penalty kick by Bogdan Pintile with just over 18 minutes to play, the Gray Wolves added two more goals. Kirchoff-Sleet took a pass from
Kevin Omore (Abidjan, Ivory Coast/Saint Jean Bosco and Farandole Internationale H.S.) and scored his first goal of the year. Omore added a goal of his own just 2:02 later, taking advantage of a Cardinal miscue and firing a blast into the corner from the middle of the box.
Â
With 11:00 to play, Kirchoff-Sleet tallied his second goal of the match, dribbling by the Andrews defenders.Â
Akilla Arno (Omaha, Neb./Northwest Magnet H.S.) tallied a penalty kick with 7:57 to play as the Gray Wolves continued the offensive attack.
Â
Lourdes finished the match with a 32-6 shot advantage and held an 11-1 edge in corner kicks won. Gutierrez made 11 saves for Andrews (0-3) while
Jose Cedillo (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross H.S.) and
Andre White (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall College) each made one stop for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Lourdes (2-0) will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Great Lakes Christian. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
