Cleary Edges Lourdes in Overtime

Lourdes rallied to tie the match late in the second half on Saturday afternoon, but Cleary netted the match-winner with 2:04 to play in overtime to defeat the Gray Wolves 3-2 at a wet Page Field in Howell, Mich.

"It's always tough to lose in OT, but if we would have eliminated a few key mistakes the score line could have been different," head coach Jackie Donovan said afterwards.  "Hopefully we will come away with learning from this game."

After being outshot early in the first half, the Gray Wolves had the game's first quality scoring opportunity.  With just under 14 minutes remaining before intermission, Tori Koontz (Chesterfield, Mich./L'anse Crevse North H.S.) slotted a ball through to Clare Ciarlino (Taylor, Mich./Truman H.S.), who's shot was saved by sliding Cougar netminder Paige Colosimo.

Lourdes found the back of the net about five minutes later, as Halee Roberts (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) knocked in a rebound from Megan Soncrant's (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) shot in the box to put the Gray Wolves on top 1-0 at the break.

Cleary (4-0) tied the match 7:10 into the second half.  Following a Lourdes foul in the penalty area, Kendra Pennington converted a penalty kick to even the match at one.  Harley Gorzelski put the Cougars in front just 5:13 later, scoring on a breakaway following a Gray Wolf turnover.

Jada Foster (Lenox Township, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) evened the match at two with 12:37 remaining in regulation, firing a shot from around 15 yards out that went off of Colosimo's hands into the back of the goal.

In the extra session, Alexis Whatcott notched the winner, scoring on a rebound after Pennington's header was saved off of the goal post.

The Gray Wolves outshot Cleary 14-3 for the match but each team had nine shots on frame.  Kiley Transit (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak H.S.) made six stops for the Gray Wolves while Colosimo made four saves and Nichole Nadolski made three stops over the final 17:17 of the match.

Lourdes (2-2) will close out its three-match road trip on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Upland, Ind. to face Taylor.  Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Turner Stadium.
