Lourdes Downs #2 Missouri Baptist as Part of Final Day Split in Missouri

Less than 16 hours after knocking off the NAIA's top-ranked team, 14th-ranked Lourdes upset second-ranked Missouri Baptist before falling to 12th-ranked Park on Saturday at the Hampton Inn Classic held at the Southwell Complex in Columbia, Mo.

The Gray Wolves defeated Missouri Baptist 25-27, 25-15, 28-26, 25-19 before falling 15-25, 26-24, 25-11, 25-16 in the final match of the tournament.

"We were much more efficient offensively as a team this morning," head coach Greg Reitz stated.  "This was another very solid team performance to beat a quality opponent."

Lourdes hit .296 against the Spartans, led by Stephanie Ruffing's (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty H.S.) 16 kills and .333 hitting percentage.  Ave Stout (Huntertown, Ind./Bishop Luers H.S.) added 12 kills and four blocks while swinging at a .409 clip.  Both Ruffing and Stout would end up on the All-Tournament Team by day's end.

Genessee Tate (West Covina, Calif./West Covina H.S.) added 10 kills while Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) handed out 38 assists.  Angelica Dippold (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) registered a team-high 13 digs while Molly Shonk (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley H.S.) added 12 digs.

The Gray Wolves outblocked Missouri Baptist 8-3 for the match and limited the Spartans to just .209 hitting on the day.

Lourdes trailed 18-14 in the opening set and rallied to force extra points, saving the first two set points against them before falling.  In the second, the Gray Wolves hit .360, committing just one error, and jumped out to a 10-2 lead on the way to evening the match.

The third set saw 22 ties before the Gray Wolves pulled out the 28-26 win and Lourdes forced Missouri Baptist to make 10 attack errors in the final set on the way to the win.

Mallory Dillon led Missouri Baptist (8-4) with 21 kills.

Lourdes won the opening set against Park and led 16-11 in the second set before the Pirates rallied.  An 11-2 Park run helped even the match and the Pirates hit .393 in the third set to take the lead.  Lourdes hit .000 in the fourth set in dropping their lone match of the weekend.

"We had trouble passing against Park and looked tired and out of sorts," Reitz added about the second match.  "We were up big in the second set and couldn't close it out.  That seemed to crush us and gave them life."

Ruffing led Lourdes with 14 kills and 18 digs while Dippold added 14 digs.

Wendy Romero led Park (7-1) with 35 kills and 13 digs while hitting .367 on the afternoon.

Lourdes (5-3) will return home on Wednesday evening to open the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center as well as Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.  The opening serve against Siena Heights is set for 7 p.m.
