A goal with 2:40 remaining in regulation pushed Bethel (Ind.) to a 3-2 victory over Lourdes on Wednesday evening at Morey Field in Mishawaka, Ind., handing the Gray Wolves their first defeat of the season.
 
Rachel Smithberger connected on a shot from outside of the 18 for what would become the match-winning tally.
 
The Pilots took the lead in the 29
th minute as Lauren Kindinger found the back of the net, only to have Lourdes rally before halftime to take the lead.  
Clare Ciarlino (Taylor, Mich./Truman H.S.) scored a pair of goals just 1:13 apart to put Lourdes in front at the break.  Her first tally saw her take a through ball from 
Isabelle Karamuco (Novi, Mich./Novi H.S.) and beat goalkeeper Allie Smith with 6:17 to play before intermission.  With 5:04 to play, Ciarlino added her fifth of the season on another breakaway to make it 2-1 Lourdes.
 
Bethel (2-3) tied the match at two at the 62:29 mark as Rebecca Kanpol registered a goal, setting the stage for the final minutes.
 
"We started off slow in the match and at the college level you can't do that," head coach 
Jackie Donovan stated afterwards.  "We didn't play the entire 90 minutes and Bethel deserved to win.  It was a good lesson for our team to learn tonight."
 
The Pilots outshot Lourdes 16-9 for the match, with 
Kiley Transit (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak H.S.) making four saves for the Gray Wolves.  Allie Smith made three first half stops for Bethel.
 
Lourdes (2-1) will remain on the road Saturday afternoon, traveling to Page Field in Howell, Mich. to face Cleary.  Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
