Cold Shooting Hampers Lourdes Men in Loss to Aquinas

Lourdes struggled shooting the ball in all capacities on Wednesday evening, and suffered a 62-41 loss at the hands of Aquinas in the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

"Aquinas is a solid team," head coach Josh Gibson said.  "Give them credit.  They had a solid game plan and executed it well."

The Gray Wolves shot just 28.8% from the floor on the evening, including a 27.3% (6-for-22) clip from three-point range.  Lourdes also made just 5-of-14 (35.7%) of its attempts at the free throw line.

"I am extremely disappointed and embarrassed by our level of effort tonight," Gibson added.  "Some losses are based on execution, others are based on effort.  Every member of this team needs to look in the mirror after the way we came out tonight and decide what their priorities are.  Unfortunately, our focus was certainly not on the correct things needed to win or even truly compete tonight."

Aquinas jumped out to a quick 17-4 lead eight minutes into the contest and never allowed Lourdes to pull within single digits the rest of the way.  The Saints shot 60.9% from the floor over the opening 20 minutes to overcome 11 first half turnovers.

After the Saints built the lead up to 17 early in the second half, Lourdes try to battle back, scoring seven straight points to pull within 10, 39-29, with just under 14 minutes remaining.  Aquinas stopped the run quickly though, and proceeded to score 20 of the next 24 points over an eight minute span to pull away and secure the victory.

Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon H.S.) was the lone Gray Wolf to finish in double figures offensively, scoring 12 points.  He also added five steals as Lourdes tallied 13 thefts on the night.  Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) added eight points.

Jake Bullock scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half to lead all players while also grabbing nine rebounds.  Ryan Schall added 11 points for Aquinas (11-10, 7-6 WHAC) while Frank DeVos chipped in 10 more.  Rashaud Orange pulled down 11 rebounds off the bench in 15 minutes of action as the Saints held a 48-29 advantage on the glass.  Aquinas did commit 16 turnovers in the game, but Lourdes was only able to convert them into three points.

"If we hope to see some different results before the season ends, we will have to change our individual approaches to the game and preparation," Gibson added.

Lourdes (3-17, 2-11) will remain at home on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves welcome Marygrove to the Ebeid Rec Center.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
