Lourdes shot 59.3% from the floor on Wednesday evening and had four players finish in double figures as the Gray Wolves defeated Concordia (Mich.) 81-60 at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
The victory snapped a four-game losing skid for the Gray Wolves and atoned for a 29-point defeat at the hands of the Cardinals on Nov. 22 of this season in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Â
"I'm extremely pleased with both our effort and execution tonight," head coach
Josh Gibson said afterwards. "We came out ready to play and really did a great job of executing our game plan on both ends of the court. It was a great team effort and every guy went in and played his role well for us tonight."
Â
The Gray Wolves started quickly, making 12 of their first 13 shots from the floor in the game's first nine minutes and built a 12-point lead, 27-15, following a three-pointer by
Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon H.S.), one of three triples for the sophomore during the early run.
Â
The hot shooting continued, as Lourdes increased the lead to 15, 35-20, at the 7:26 mark after a tip-in from
Anthony Swanigan (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.). The Gray Wolves made 15-of-19 to start the game, and converted offensive rebounds for second chance baskets on two of the four misses.
Â
The lead grew to as many as 18, 44-26, with four minutes to play before halftime, before the Cardinals answered with seven straight points before halftime. A Swanigan dunk as time expired on the period ended the run, and gave Lourdes a 46-33 edge at the break.
Â
After shooting 62.5% from the field in the opening 20 minutes, Lourdes stayed nearly as hot in the second half, connecting at a 55.6% clip. The Gray Wolves scored 12 of the first 13 points out of the locker room, and held Concordia without a field goal for nearly six minutes to start the second stanza.
Â
Lourdes led by as many as 28, 67-39, with 11:10 to play, and only a 12-2 run by the Cardinals allowed the visitors to close within 20. The win was the largest for the Gray Wolves since a 35-point victory on opening night (Oct. 29) against Akron Wayne.
Â
Swanigan led Lourdes with 18 points and eight rebounds, making 8-of-11 shots from the floor.Â
Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) tallied 16 points and six assists while
Levert Bristol (Dothan, Ala./Northview H.S.) added 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Frazier also finished in double figures with 15 points for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Connor Phee was the only player for Concordia (8-14, 5-11 WHAC) to finish in double figures, scoring 12 points on the night.
Â
"Strangely enough, we played arguably our worst game of the season at Concordia in November and one of our very best tonight," Gibson added. Hopefully it's indicative of how far we've come as a team and tonight is a starting point for us to finish the season strong."
Â
Lourdes (4-18, 3-12) will begin a three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head to Fort Wayne, Ind. to battle 18
th-ranked Indiana Tech. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the Schaefer Center Gymnasium.
