Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) scored 18 points and
Anthony Swanigan (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) added 17 points as Lourdes scored a 71-63 victory over Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon on the road at Ridler Field House in Southfield, Mich.
Lourdes shot 50% from the floor and made 7-of-12 (58.3%) three-pointers to snap an eight-game losing skid. The Gray Wolves also committed just nine turnovers to win on the road for the first time this season.
The Gray Wolves held Lawrence Tech to just 38.5% shooting from the floor and just a 31.3% clip from long range.
"I was really pleased with the way we competed, especially in the second half," head coach
Josh Gibson said. "We did a really good job of owning the glass and taking care of the ball after halftime, and I think that made a big difference in the game. We also did a nice job defensively overall, holding them under 40% from the floor."
Lourdes built an early 16-10 lead midway through the opening stanza before the Blue Devils went on a 13-3 run to forge in front. The Gray Wolves were able to battle back before intermission, and the two teams went into the locker room tied at 31.
The Gray Wolves scored the first four points of the second half to retake the lead, only to see Lawrence Tech respond, and pull back in front 42-39, with just under 12 minutes to play. Swanigan made a free throw at the 10:39 mark to put Lourdes back on top, 45-44, and the Gray Wolves would not relinquish the advantage the rest of the way.
The lead grew to 62-53 with under three minutes to play. The Blue Devils pulled to within five with a minute remaining, but Lourdes mad five of six free throws in the final 60 seconds to secure the win. The Gray Wolves were just 7-of-18 from the charity stripe prior to the clutch free throws down the stretch.
Levert Bristol (Dothan, Ala./Northview H.S.) added 10 points for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves had three players finish in double figures. Swanigan led the team with nine rebounds while Bristol added seven more as Lourdes held a 37-31 advantage on the glass.
"With the exception of the way we shot free throws and a couple of missed assignments on defense, I thought we played a balanced game today," Gibson added. "Different guys stepped up big in different spots and it was a great team win. We still have a lot of season left and we intend to keep working and keep fighting to get better every day."
Erik Davenport led Lawrence Tech (2-14, 1-9 WHAC) with 14 points while Robbie Geoghegan added 12 points for the Blue Devils.
Lourdes (3-14, 2-8) will return home on Wednesday evening to host Siena Heights. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center as the Gray Wolves conclude the first half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.
