Jenna Penz (Troy, Mich./Athens H.S.) scored the match-winning goal 5:42 into overtime on Friday afternoon, lifting Lourdes to a 2-1 victory over Lawrence Tech at Wildcat Stadium.
Penz fired a shot from the right edge of the box that deflected off a Blue Devil defender into the back of the net for her second goal of the season, giving the Gray Wolves' their first overtime triumph in program history.
Lourdes controlled possession for most of the match, and outshot Lawrence Tech 13-3 in the opening 45 minutes, including 6-2 on goal, but the match was scoreless at halftime. The Blue Devils scored on their only shot attempt of the second half, a blast by Alayne Nyboer from 40 yards out, as the visitors took the lead 1-0 with 32:21 remaining in the contest.
The Gray Wolves evened the match at one with just 7:24 remaining, as
Tori Koontz (Chesterfield, Mich./L'anse Crevse North H.S.) tallied her first goal of the season, scoring on a free kick over the Lawrence Tech wall from 22 yards away, a goal which eventually forced the overtime.
Lourdes finished with a 25-5 shot advantage for the match, including 10-3 on goal, and had the only four corner opportunities in the contest.
Kiley Transit (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak H.S.) made two saves in goal for the Gray Wolves, while Rebecca Almandoz made eight stops for Lawrence Tech (6-8-1, 3-4-2 WHAC) in the loss.
Lourdes (6-7-2, 2-5-1), which snapped its six-match winless streak with the victory, remains home on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Michigan-Dearborn. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
