Lourdes wrapped up the 2017 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 Senior Day victory over Concordia (Mich.) at Wildcat Stadium to clinch a berth in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament, which begins next week.
Â
"This was a great result to send out four very special seniors in our program," head coach
Jackie Donovan said following the victory. "Their commitment and dedication to this team will leave a lasting legacy."
Â
The victory, the Gray Wolves' eighth of the season, ties the school record with the 2015 squad for the most in program history. Indecently, 2015 was also the last time Lourdes qualified for postseason play. The Gray Wolves have also assured themselves at least a .500 season for the first time in school history.
Â
The only offense of the match came early, as
Tara Blundell (Essexville, Mich./Garber H.S.), one of the four seniors honored prior to the match, had the ball near the end line on the left side of the penalty area. She sent a pass back to
Clare Ciarlino (Taylor, Mich./Truman H.S.) at the top corner of the box, and the sophomore fired a shot to the far upper corner of the next just 11:07 into the contest.
Â
Concordia (9-7, 5-5 WHAC) outshot Lourdes 9-4 in the opening 45 minutes, but was unable to even the score before intermission. The Cardinals continued to put pressure on the Gray Wolves in the second half, outshooting the hosts 12-5 to finish with a 21-9 shot advantage, including 10-5 on net. Freshman netminder
Kerstyn Williams (Taylor, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) was strong in goal though for Lourdes, turning aside all 10 shots she faced to earn her first collegiate shutout.
Â
The win also allowed the seniors, Blundell,
Remy Houttekier (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover H.S.),
Tori Koontz (Chesterfield, Mich./L'anse Crevse North H.S.), and
Megan Soncrant (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) to finish their home career with a 6-3-2 mark at Wildcat Stadium this season.
Â
Lourdes (8-7-2, 4-5-1) enters the postseason on a three-match winning streak. The Gray Wolves will open tournament action on Wednesday (Nov. 1), with official pairings being released by the league office.
