Lourdes made a season-high 11 three-pointers on Sunday afternoon, but Albion jumped out to a double digit lead in the opening quarter and never looked back, defeating the Gray Wolves 98-66 inside of Kresge Gymnasium in Albion, Mich.
Â
The Britons shot better than 50% from the floor in each of the first three quarters, and finished the game shooting 53.1% overall while making 24-of-30 (80%) free throws. Lourdes, on the other hand, connected at just a 33.3% clip from the field and made just 13-of-28 (46.4%) of its free throw attempts.
Â
"It's difficult to win games when we lack defensive effort and have a poor defensive philosophy focus," head coach
Summer Quesenberry said after the game. "We have the opportunity to get back into practice tomorrow and continue working hard on team concepts and strategy."
Â
Albion took control of the game over a four-minute span in the opening quarter, scoring 16 unanswered points to build a 26-11 lead. Lourdes scored the game's next six points, including a three-pointer from
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.), to close within nine, but that would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the rest of the way.
Â
A 10-0 run by the Britons in the second quarter pushed the hosts advantage to 30, 53-23, before Lourdes was able to pull within 57-32 at the break. Albion went on a 12-1 run in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 74-34, and the Gray Wolves were unable to pull any closer than 30 the rest of the way.
Â
Semler led Lourdes with 15 points, making five triples, while
Mirandia Green (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) and
Riley Raburn (Horton, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) each added 11 points. For Raburn, it marked her first career double figure effort as a Gray Wolf.Â
Â
Evelyn Wischmeyer led Albion (4-0) with 24 points while Rain Hinton added 17 points and 10 boards as the Britons outrebounded Lourdes 52-29 for the afternoon.
Â
Lourdes (3-4) returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves travel to Livonia, Mich. to battle Madonna. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. inside The Activities Center.
