A 25-7 run over the final eight minutes allowed Lourdes to score a Senior Day victory over Lawrence Tech on Saturday, as the Gray Wolves defeated the Blue Devils 69-53 at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"I'm just happy and proud for our seniors," head coach
Josh Gibson said afterwards. "There's so much emotion involved on Senior Day that it's tough for players to really focus on the game sometimes. In addition, I'm pleased that we found a way to win our final two home games this season. Having a facility like this needs to be an advantage for us and I want to thank our students, families, friends, and fans for supporting us here all year."
Â
Lawrence Tech led 12-6 early before Lourdes went on a 14-4 run midway through the opening half to build a four-point advantage of its own. The two sides stayed close throughout the final minutes of the stanza and
Anthony Swanigan's (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.)Â basket with a minute to play before intermission knotted the game at 25 at the break.
Â
The Blue Devils rebuilt their six-point lead, 35-29, over the first four minutes of the second half, and still led by five with 11 minutes to play. Lourdes battled back to tie the game at 46 on a jumper by Swanigan with 6:20 to play, which started a 14-3 run over the next three minutes, putting the Gray Wolves in front for good. The spurt continued to grow, extending to 23-5 over seven minutes, as Lourdes earned back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
Â
"I thought our guys settled down in the second half and really executed well on both ends of the court," Gibson commented.
Â
Swanigan led Lourdes with 18 points and seven rebounds while
Najeeb Johnson (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights H.S.) added 12 points.Â
Levert Bristol (Dothan, Ala./Northview H.S.) tallied 11 points and
Daniel Steen (Wantirna South, Australia/Emmaus H.S.) chipped in the first basket of the game, as the four seniors accounted for 42 points on the night.
Â
"The members of this senior class have all taken different roads to end up here this season, and I appreciate their contributions to the program," Gibson added. While I wish we could have won more for them this year, as we build future success these players will be remembered as the foundational group for our program."
Â
Derek Seidl led Lawrence Tech (3-23, 2-18 WHAC) with 15 points while Erik Davenport scored 11 more for the visitors.

Lourdes (6-21, 5-15) will take to the road on Wednesday evening to battle Madonna. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside of the Activities Center in Livonia, Mich.
