Lourdes scored twice in the final 1:19, but fell one goal short against ninth-ranked Siena Heights on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium, suffering a 12-11 setback.
Â
Siena Heights took control early, scoring the game's first three goals before Lourdes shifted the momentum over the final 14 minutes of the first half. Trailing 3-0, the Gray Wolves scored five unanswered goals to build a 5-3 lead at the break, the first halftime advantage for Lourdes this season.
Â
The Saints scored five of the first six, and eight of the first 10 goals of the second half, though, building an 11-7 lead with 7:49 to play. Goals by
Shelby Kellar (Holland, Ohio/Saint Ursula H.S.) and
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) cut the deficit in half, but Siena Heights (5-2, 2-2 WHAC) added what proved to be an important insurance goal with 2:12 remaining.
Â
Trailing 12-9, Kellar added her fourth goal of the game with 1:19 to play and
Tiara Reed (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) added another with 44 seconds left to pull within one, but that was as close as Lourdes would get.
Â
"We showed a great deal of fight and determination to battle back twice today, once from the first half deficit to take the lead and again late to pull within one," head coach
Paul Sieben said afterwards. "Unfortunately we need to play up to our full potential for a full 60 minutes in order to get the win."
Â
Long finished with four goals along with Kellar while
Mary Tressel (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls H.S.) and
Anna Zofchak (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover H.S.) each had goals as well.
Â
Tressel was solid all-around, winning 10 draw controls and collecting eight ground balls while also forcing five turnovers.
Â
"Mary had a great game for us in the midfield," Sieben added.
Â
Hannah Cullis (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) also had four ground balls for the Gray Wolves, as Lourdes finished with a 22-20 edge in that category.
Â
Siena Heights outshot Lourdes 34-31 for the game, with Marissa Cirino and Aliisa Mason each scoring four times for the Saints.
Â
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made 12 saves in the cage for Lourdes while Tabitha Ferguson made 15 stops for the Saints.
Â
Lourdes (1-5, 0-3) will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday afternoon to battle Concordia (Mich.) with the opening draw slated for 1 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
