Runs were tough to come by for Lourdes on Saturday afternoon at Racer Field as the Gray Wolves were swept in a doubleheader by 17
th-ranked Northwestern Ohio 11-1 and 10-0.
The Gray Wolves managed just five hits in the opener, with
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central H.S.) finishing the game 2-for-2 with a walk.
Northwestern Ohio jumped in front with four runs in the opening inning on just two hits, taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter. The Racers added to the lead in the second with two more tallies, but Lourdes escaped more damage, stranding the bases loaded.
The Gray Wolves broke through in the third as
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and advanced to third on a hit by Pastor.
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) delivered a run-scoring single to right, accounting for the lone Lourdes run of the game.
The Racers plated single runs in the fourth and fifth before adding three more runs in the sixth, two of which were unearned following a pair of Lourdes errors.
Jonathan Rodriguez drove home four runs for the Racers in the opener while DayFran Ortiz went 3-for-4 at the plate, leading a 12-hit attack.
Damon Proctor went the distance on the hill for Northwestern Ohio to earn the win (8-0), striking out eight while walking just two.
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (1-5), surrendering six runs and six hits while walking five in three innings of work.
Northwestern Ohio limited Lourdes to just three hits in the nightcap, as Kyle Thomas went seven innings, striking out 10, to earn the win (5-1).
The Racers jumped in front with six runs in the opening inning, taking advantage of four walks. The hosts added two more runs in the third before single tallies in the sixth and eighth provided all of the offense Northwestern Ohio would need for the afternoon. Blake Maines went 3-for-3 in game two to lead the attack.
Zach Babb (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), allowing six runs and two hits while walking four in just one-third of an inning.
Lourdes (6-19, 3-14 WHAC) and Northwestern Ohio (25-10, 15-1) will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday afternoon with a single game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Racer Field.
