Fifth-ranked Lawrence Tech scored six of the game's first seven goals on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Devils defeated second-ranked Lourdes 17-11 at the LTU Athletic Field in Southfield, Mich.
Â
The Blue Devils scored three times in the first four minutes and six times in the first 11, with just a goal by
D.J. Harris (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg H.S.) interrupting the run. Harris added another goal before the end of the quarter and
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.) scored early in the second, to pull within three.
Â
Lawrence Tech responded with three goals in a 44-second span before
Jared Yoshino (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) scored with 11:34 to play in the second, the final tally before intermission. The Gray Wolves trailed 9-4 at the break.
Â
Harris' third goal of the day and a tally by
Tanner Jaramillo (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) pulled Lourdes within three again, 9-6, with 11:06 remaining in the third, but that would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the rest of the way. Lawrence Tech closed the period with four unanswered goals, taking a seven-goal lead to the final 15 minutes.
Â
Gilhooly and
Casey Hilfinger (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S) started the fourth. Gilhooly added a third later in the quarter, while
Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) and
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook H.S.) each added goals as well, but it would not be enough for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Lawrence Tech outshot Lourdes 47-33 for the game, including a 17-3 advantage in the opening quarter, and the Blue Devils also held a 39-35 advantage in ground balls.
Â
Jared Huiskens (Bay City, Mich./Central H.S.) made 15 saves in goal in relief for the Gray Wolves while adding four ground balls. Gilhooly and
Austin Burger (Monroe, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) each had four ground balls as well.
"There were moments today when we played together and we looked very good," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said. "When we did not play as a unit, there were breakdowns. I am looking forward to seeing how we all reach moving forwards."
Â
Tim Popp led Lawrence Tech (10-1, 6-0 WHAC) with four goals while Frank Badalamenti had seven ground balls for the Blue Devils. Jacob Sacdalan made 11 saves in the win.
Â
Lourdes (6-2, 2-2) will return home to Wildcat Stadium on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Siena Heights. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
