No. 3 Davenport Uses Strong Second Half to Down Lourdes

Lourdes hung with third-ranked Davenport for nearly 30 minutes on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium, but the Panthers took control in the second half to defeat the Gray Wolves 19-8.

For the first 28 minutes of the first half Lourdes went toe-to-toe with the Panthers, trailing by just two, 9-7, following Alyssa Long's (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) fourth goal of the period.  Davenport added two goals before halftime to take a four-goal advantage into the break.

Ashley Hunt (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May H.S.) scored twice for the Gray Wolves, her second putting the hosts in front 5-4 with 17:04 to play before the break.  Shelby Kellar (Holland, Ohio/Saint Ursula H.S.) added a first half goal as well for Lourdes.

"We showed our best teamwork of the season during the first half," head coach Paul Sieben said afterwards.  "We demonstrated our capabilities against one of the top teams in the country."

Davenport (8-1, 7-0 WHAC) used the final two goals of the first half to start a 10-0 run, as the Panthers scored the first eight goals of the second half to pull away.  Anna Marie Weber (North Canton, Ohio/Jackson H.S.) finally broke the string for Lourdes with her goal in the game's final minute.

Brooke Knoll scored nine times for the Panthers while Taylor Ries added four more tallies.  Tara Pluger handed out five assists for Davenport, which outshot Lourdes 42-18 on the afternoon.

Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made 13 saves for Lourdes in goal while Hannah Cullis (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) collected eight ground balls.

Lourdes (2-7, 1-5) will travel to Livonia, Mich. on Wednesday afternoon to battle Madonna.  The opening draw is set for 5 p.m. at the Madonna Soccer & Lacrosse Field.

"We look forward to continuing our improvement, especially from how we played in the first half, moving forward this season," Sieben concluded.
