Lourdes and Concordia (Mich.) began their three-game series on Thursday evening at Mercy Field with the Cardinals defeating the Gray Wolves 12-1.
Â
The Cardinals jumped in front in the opening inning, scoring on a bloop double followed by a single up the middle from Keith Phillips.
Â
A seven-run fourth inning, in which Concordia sent 11 batters to the plate, broke the game open. Blaine Milheim capped the inning with a two-run double.
Â
Lourdes found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as
Dallas Riggs (Prescott, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.S.) singled to lead off the inning. Another hit by
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) followed and
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Riggs.
Â
That would be the lone offense on the night against Concordia hurler Blake Kuszmaul, who went six innings to get the win (7-0). Kuszmaul allowed just six hits while striking out four.
Â
Concordia added four more runs in the fifth, as 10 batters came to the plate with the Cardinals tallying six hits in the inning to close out the scoring.
Â
Phillips and Marshall Oetting each had three hits for Concordia as part of the visitors' 16-hit attack. Riggs had three hits for the Gray Wolves, accounting for half of the team's hit total.
Â
Kolby Rogge (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) suffered the loss (2-6) for Lourdes on the mound, despite allowing just one run and four hits in three innings of work.
Â
Lourdes (7-25, 4-18 WHAC) and Concordia (32-9, 15-6) will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Mercy Field. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
