Hillsdale scored the go-ahead runs in the late innings of both games on Tuesday, and defeated Lourdes 5-4 and 5-3 at Williams Field in Hillsdale, Mich.
Â
Taylor Tafelski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) gave Lourdes the early lead in game one, as her first inning double scored
Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.).Â
Â
The Chargers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Lourdes tied the game in the fifth as Birr's bunt single scored
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.), who tripled to lead off the inning.
Â
Hillsdale took the lead again in the bottom of the fifth, plating two more runs, taking advantage of three walks in the inning.
Â
Lourdes tied the game in the top of the seventh
Marissa Kostick's (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) double plated Genzman and Birr, knotting the game at four.
Â
Back-to-back doubles to open the bottom of the inning, the second by Bekah Kastning, gave the hosts the win though.
Â
Birr, Kostick, and Genzman each had two hits as part of a 10-hit attack for Lourdes against Charger hurler Erin Gordon, who went the distance for the win (5-5).Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (2-7), yielding five hits and six walks in the complete game effort.
Â
Hillsdale (23-18) scored first in game two, as a wild pitch allowed the first run to cross home plate.
Â
A single by Tafelski and a double by
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) put two runners aboard for
Lexi Ripperger (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame H.S.), who brough both home with a double to give the Gray Wolves the lead.
Â
A
Jimi McNew (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) scored Stanton in the fourth, putting Lourdes in front 3-1.
Â
A three-run fifth inning allowed Hillsdale to rally and take the lead, and the Chargers added an insurance run in the sixth to solidify the victory.
Â
Stanton was the only Gray Wolf to have a multi-hit game in the nightcap, as Lourdes managed just six hits, all against starter Alexis Newby. Gordon came on with three innings of perfect relief to earn her second win (6-5) of the day. Kostick started and took the loss (4-7) for the Gray Wolves, allowing five runs on 11 hits in five innings.
Â
Lourdes (10-22) will remain on the road Thursday afternoon, traveling to University City, Mich. to battle Saginaw Valley State. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m. at the SVSU Softball Complex.
