Lourdes saw Siena Heights rally in Saturday's opening game of the doubleheader to defeat the Gray Wolves 13-8 before turning the tables on the Saints, winning the nightcap 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh at Pacesetter Park.
Â
Game two saw the Gray Wolves fall behind early as Siena Heights scored a pair of runs in the opening inning.Â
Â
Lourdes responded in the second with a pair of runs, one on a single by
Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) and another on a muffed throw. Lourdes took the lead in the third on a run-scoring single by
Paige Churchfield (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley H.S.) before an error increased the lead to 4-2.
Â
Siena Heights tied the game in the fourth, but Lourdes again found offense in the fifth, plating three runs to build a 7-4 lead.Â
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) walked with the bases loaded and
Kelsey Beck (Paulding, Ohio/Paulding H.S.) added a two-run single.
Â
Again the Saints tied the game in the next half inning, scoring three runs, all with two outs.
Â
The game remained tied into the bottom of the seventh when Birr singled with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Encalado.Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) then laced a single to left-center to plate the winning run.
Â
Birr and Beck both had three hits in the game as part of a 13-hit contest for the Gray Wolves. Kostick also earned the win (5-7) in the circle, going the distance. Kayla Kormos suffered the loss (7-2) in relief for Siena Heights (25-11-1, 10-7-1 WHAC).
Â
Kyndle Wolfinger went 4-for-5 to lead the Saints' 13-hit attack in the night cap.
Â
"In game two we played much better defense and had a better pitching performance than in the opener," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "It's always fun to have a walk-off win."
Â
Game one saw Lourdes build a 5-0 lead, only to see the Saints take advantage of five Lourdes errors and 10 walks to rally for the win.
Â
The Gray Wolves plated a run in each of the first four frames. A Kostick double in the first scored Encalado with the game's first run before back-to-back RBI singles by Birr and Encalado followed by a Kostick sacrifice fly made it 4-0 after two.
Â
In the third Lourdes plated an unearned run on a
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) groundout to make it 5-0. After Siena Heights scored four in the fourth to pull within one,
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) doubled home Encalado in the bottom of the frame to make it 6-4 Lourdes.
Â
The Saints scored one in the fifth before sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight times in the sixth, with five of the runs being unearned.Â
Â
Lourdes tried to rally in the ninth, scoring on an Encalado single and a Churchfield pinch-hit bases loaded walk, but the Gray Wolves stranded the bases loaded.
Â
"Losing the first game today was a disappointment," Gordon added. "Anytime you score eight runs you should come away with a win. We had too many walks, hit batters, wild pitches, and errors."
Â
Birr had three hits in game one of the doubleheader as well as Lourdes tallied 12 in the opener.
Â
Kormos earned the win (7-1) in relief for the Saints, allowing three runs and six hits in four innings of work.Â
Lexi Buck (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) suffered the loss (1-2) in relief, allowing seven runs, only two of which were earned, in just one-third of an inning.
Â
Lourdes (10-24, 3-11) will return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to battle eighth-ranked Davenport. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the Farmers Athletic Complex.
