Seventh-ranked Lourdes jumped out to a four-goal halftime lead on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium, on the way to defeating Aquinas 10-7 to snap a two-game losing skid.
Â
"The boys are really starting to come together," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "They played a as team and gave full effort the entire game. We are excited about how we are playing going into the final stretch of the season."
Â
Jared Yoshino (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) put Lourdes on top three minutes into the game and
D.J. Harris (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg H.S.) doubled the advantage just over two minutes later, but the Saints answered with a pair of goals to knot the game at two.
Â
Two more goals by Yoshino before the end of the quarter put Lourdes in front 4-2. After Aquinas scored the first goal of the third, Lourdes tallied four straight, including a pair from
Tanner Jaramillo (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) on the way to an 8-4 halftime lead.
Â
Aquinas (7-4, 2-3 WHAC) scored the first two goals of the third, but a tally by
Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) stopped the Saints' run and each team found the back of the cage just once in the final 15 minutes.
Â
Yoshino and Harris both finished with three goals while Vowles and Jaramillo had two each for the Gray Wolves. Lourdes outshot Aquinas 44-24, but had just a 25-20 edge on goal.
Â
Conner Mishler (Lambertville, Mich./Saint John's H.S.) made 13 saves in the cage for Lourdes while
Casey Hilfinger (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) collected ground balls. Yoshino and
Nic Mueller (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) both had five ground balls in the win as Lourdes finished with a 32-25 advantage in that category.
Â
Lourdes (7-2, 3-2) will travel to Beverly Hills, Mich. on Wednesday evening to face Michigan-Dearborn. The opening faceoff is set for 8 p.m. at Detroit Country Day School.
