Lourdes rebounded from dropping the opener of Saturday's doubleheader to Concordia (Mich.) 4-3 to defeat the Cardinals in the nightcap 3-0 at Pacesetter Park.
Â
"We really played as a team in both games today," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said.
Â
The Cardinals scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh, as a lead-off single, a stolen base, and a double from Chandlar Zavala allowed the visitors to break a 3-3 tie.
Â
Concordia struck first in the second inning with a two-out single to take the early lead.
Â
Lourdes batted around in the third, scoring three times.Â
Kelsey Beck (Paulding, Ohio/Paulding H.S.) tied the game with a single and
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) followed with a two-run base hit.
Â
The Gray Wolves would maintain the lead until the fifth when Samantha Capuzzi's two-run triple to right with two outs knotted the game at three.
Â
Lourdes tallied nine hits in the opener, with
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) going 3-for-4 with a double. Beck also had a pair of hits in game one, but the Gray Wolves left 11 runners on base.
Â
"We left too many runners stranded in scoring position in that first game," Gordon added.
Â
Samantha Eubanks earned the win (6-7) in the circle for Concordia, striking out five while going the distance.Â
Samantha Shirling (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (1-6) in relief, despite allowing just one run and four hits while fanning three in 2.2 innings.
Â
The Gray Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning of game two. Beck drove home
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.), the only player with two hits in the game for Lourdes, with the game's first run. Kostick followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.).Â
Â
Lourdes added to the lead in the fourth as
Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) delivered a RBI single with the bases loaded, giving the Gray Wolves a three-run advantage.
Â
"We came through with some nice timely hits in game two," said Gordon.
Â
Kostick took care of the rest in the circle, earning the complete game shutout (2-3), her second straight. She did not walk anyone and struck out six while scattering just five hits.
Â
"Marissa threw a nice game and kept her pitch count down," concluded Gordon. "It's good to see her regaining her confidence in the circle."
Â
Jessica England took the loss (5-7) for Concordia (11-20, 4-4 WHAC), allowing five hits and four walks in a complete game effort.
Â
Lourdes (7-13, 1-3) will return to the diamond on Sunday, hosting Madonna in a WHAC doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. at Pacesetter Park.
