Tara Blundell (Essexville, Mich./Garber H.S.) and
Alyssa Swanson (Canton, Mich./Plymouth H.S.) each scored their first goals as a Gray Wolf on Wednesday afternoon, helping to lead Lourdes to a 2-1 victory over Indiana East at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
"I am very proud of this team and their effort on the day," head coach
Jackie Donovan said after the match. "We challenged the girls tactically and they rose to meet our expectations."
Â
Blundell, a fifth-year senior, put the Gray Wolves in front at the 12:01 mark. She settled a ball at the top of the box after receiving a cross from
Remy Houttekier (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover H.S.) and fired it into the back of the net, beating Red Wolves' goalkeeper Amanda Nicholson.
Â
Indiana East (2-3) answered just 1:22 later. Dejhanna O'Bryant sent a long ball to the end line, where Cendy Mejia collected and delivered a cross to Lauryn Scott, who tallied the equalizer.
Â
With just 5:30 remaining until halftime, Swanson volleyed home a free kick from Houttekier, who handed out her second assist of the match, scoring her first collegiate goal.
Â
After Lourdes held an 11-5 shot edge at intermission, neither side managed more than two shot attempts over the final 45 minutes and the result held. With the win, Lourdes is now unbeaten (2-0-1) in its last three contests.
Â
Kerstyn Williams (Taylor, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) made four saves in the first half for the Gray Wolves while
Kiley Transit (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak H.S.) stopped the only shot she faced in the second half. Nicholson finished with six saves for Indiana East.
Â
Lourdes (2-2-1) will continue its current homestand on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Bethel (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
