Michigan-Dearborn Rallies Past Lourdes in Second Half

The University of Michigan-Dearborn overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and defeated Lourdes 65-57 on Saturday afternoon in the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center to open the second half of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action.

"Overall we were not consistent in our efforts today as a team," head coach Summer Quesenberry said afterwards.

Lourdes led 38-29 at halftime before the Wolverines scored the first 11 points of the third period to jumpstart a 15-2 run that put the visitors in front 44-40 midway through the quarter.  The Gray Wolves responded, tying the game before the end of the stanza on a three-point play by Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy).

Tatyana Reynolds (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) started the fourth with back-to-back three-pointers, putting Lourdes in front 52-46.  The Gray Wolves maintained the six-point advantage with eight minutes to play when Michigan-Dearborn scored the game's next 10 points over a four-minute span, as part of a 16-2 run.  The Wolverines led by eight, 62-54, following the spurt, and Lourdes was unable to pull any closer than five point over the final 1:30 of the game.

Michigan-Dearborn jumped in front quickly to start the contest, scoring 11 of the first 13 points in just over three minutes.  Lourdes slowly closed the gap, pulling within one on a LaTyrah Beasley (Toledo, Ohio/Bowsher H.S.) lay-in, capping a 6-for-6 quarter from the floor for the sophomore off the bench.

The Wolverines led 27-26 with four minutes to pay in the second before the Gray Wolves finished the half on an 11-2 run to build the nine-point halftime advantage.

Reynolds led Lourdes with 17 points, making five three-pointers in the contest, while Beasley finished with her 12 points, all from the opening period.

The Gray Wolves finished the game shooting 33.3% from the floor, including just 20.7% in the second half, and committed 18 turnovers.

Jeorgia Jones led Michigan-Dearborn (6-15, 1-11 WHAC) with 27 points and nine rebounds while Natalie Spala added 16 points.  The Wolverines shot 41.3% from long range on the evening.

"We gave up 17 points in second chance opportunities and turned the ball over 18 times which led to 13 points as well," Quesenberry added.  When you give any team 30 points, it becomes difficult to win a basketball game.  I expect that we will refocus our efforts and be ready to compete on Wednesday."

Lourdes (7-11, 2-9) will begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday evening, traveling to Aquinas.  Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. inside the Sturrus Spurts & Fitness Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.  The Gray Wolves had been slated to play at Olivet on Sunday afternoon, but that game has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts with the Comets.
