Madonna hit .250 for the match on Wednesday evening to defeat Lourdes 37-35, 25-23, 25-18 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"We didn't play well enough for long enough to win the match tonight," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "Madonna played well and dictated the pace."
Â
The Gray Wolves fell behind quickly, 11-4, in the opening set before battling back slowly. An extended 19-9 run put Lourdes in front 23-20 before the Crusaders fought back to force extra points. Both teams had six set points in the stanza before Madonna earned the win on their seventh attempt.
Â
The second set saw 19 ties and 10 lead changes. Lourdes held a 23-22 lead before three straight errors by the Gray Wolves allowed the visitors to rally and earn the 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
Madonna (21-9, 10-7 WHAC) raced out to a 5-1 lead in the third and never allowed Lourdes to close the gap while completing the sweep.
Â
