Lourdes snapped a three-match losing streak and picked up its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory of the season on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 victory over Cleary at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
Kiley Transit (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak H.S.) made four saves in goal for her third clean sheet of the season, and fourth of her career.
Â
The Gray Wolves jumped in front with 11:43 remaining before halftime.Â
Lauren Poslaiko (Woodhaven, Mich./Carlson H.S.) fired in a free kick from more than 30 yards out that was saved by Brooke Thomas, but the Cougar netminder could not corral the ball, and
Erin Caldwell (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing H.S.) knocked home the rebound for her second goal of the season.
Â
Just under 10 minutes later, with 1:47 left before halftime, Caldwell was on the giving end, as her corner kick led to an assist as
Maria Schmidt (Rockton, Ill./Boylan Catholic H.S.) headed home the ball in the goal for her second tally of the season.
Â
The 2-0 halftime lead carried throughout the second half, despite Cleary holding a 7-3 shot advantage over the final 45 minutes. Lourdes finished the match with a slim 11-10 shot advantage, but 10 of the 11 Gray Wolf attempts were on frame.
Â
Thomas made eight saves for Cleary (5-4-1, 0-3-1) in the loss.
Â
Lourdes (4-5-1, 1-3) will return to the road on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves travel to Grand Rapid, Mich. to battle Aquinas. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Aquinas Athletic Field.
