Four athletes scored in double figures for the Gray Wolves as the Lourdes men's basketball team ran its win streak to four games and picked up a convincing 82-55 victory over Indiana-South Bend in its final tune up game prior to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Tuesday evening at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"I was really proud of our effort tonight," said head coach
Josh Gibson following the victory. "Our first five games we had spurts where we played well, but I thought we put a full 40-minute game together tonight. We had a lot of guys give us big minutes and really showed the potential this team has."
After scoring the contests first bucket, Lourdes fell behind 7-2. A fast break dunk and three pointer on back-to-back possessions from
Brett Lauf (Napoloen, Ohio/Napoleon) sparked a 9-0 run that gave the Gray Wolves an 11-7 lead.
From there the Gray Wolves continued their aggressive play, extending to a 20-4 run to grab a 22-11 lead with 10:57 remaining in the first half.
The Titans (2-5) would climb back in to the contest to get within 22-15, but a three ball from
Bryce McComb (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton) sparked a quick 7-0 run that pushed the lead to 29-15 with 7:18 left in the first half. Lourdes would take a 40-30 lead into the intermission following a buzzer-beating jumper from
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown).
The Gray Wolves separated themselves in the second half, pushing their lead to as many as 65-35 following a layup from
Evan Vasquez (Delta, Ohio/Delta) at the 10:38 mark of the second half.
Indiana-South Bend wouldn't get any closer than 15 points in the second half as Lourdes went on to claim the 82-55 victory.
Snow led all scorers with 14 points and completed his second double-double in three games as he tied his career-high and pulled down 13 rebounds in the victory.
Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon) and McComb each added 12 points apiece and
Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall) netted 11 points for Lourdes.
Lourdes controlled the glass, outrebounding the visiting Titans by a 49-30 margin. The hosts turned its 16 offensive rebounds into 29 second chance points, compared to IU-South Bend's six second chance points.
The Gray Wolves shot an impressive 46.6% (32-of-69) from the field and nailed 12 three pointers, while the Titans were 21-of-60 (35.0%) from the field and only knocked down seven three point balls.
"These first handful of games were a good test for us to get ready for conference play," Gibson continued. "Madonna is a really good team and we got a good look at them during their tournament. We're looking forward to getting conference play underway."
Lourdes (5-1) will return to action and open WHAC play on Saturday at 3 p.m. as it travels to Livonia, Mich. to take on Madonna at The Activities Center.
