Goshen led wire-to-wire on Saturday afternoon, handing Lourdes its first setback of the season as the Maple Leafs defeated the Gray Wolves 67-62 inside of Gunden Gymnasium in Goshen, Ind.
"This was a very tough game," head coach
John Kenger said afterwards. "The fight in these girls was awesome to watch even though we fell short. There were so many positives in that game that we can walk away with. As long as we learn from it we will keep getting stronger as a team."
The Maple Leafs jumped in front early 12-3 less than five minutes into the contest and maintained a nine-point advantage after the opening 10 minutes. Lourdes slowly clawed back, pulling to within four, 31-27, at the break.
Lourdes was within three, 42-39, with just over four minutes to play in the third when Goshen went on a 11-2 run to push the lead to 12 in the closing seconds of the period. The Maple Leafs led by as many as 13, 60-47, with 6:25 to play in the game when
Jami Hardy (Perrysburg, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) scored the next eight points to close the gap to five. Goshen answered with a three-pointer and the Gray Wolves were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
Hardy led all scorers with 16 points off the bench, making 7-of-12 shots from the floor.
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) added 13 points, making three triples, while
Hunter Kershaw (Columbus, Ohio/Westland H.S.) added 12 more.
Lourdes shot 39.3% from the floor and committed 19 turnovers while Goshen connected at a 39.7% clip with 18 miscues.
Graysen Cockerham led four Goshen (2-1) players in double figures with 13 points while Alyson Prigge added 11.
Lourdes (1-1) will close out its three-game road trip on Monday evening, as the Gray Wolves travel to Circleville, Ohio to face Ohio Christian. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside the Maxwell Center.
