The Lourdes men's basketball team posted its second consecutive win on Tuesday evening, defeating Wright State-Lake 78-64 at the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"I'm proud of the way we played tonight," said head coach
Josh Gibson following the contest. "We were very balanced offensively and we got some big performances off of the bench. I was happy with our defensive play for the most part. There was a time there where they were able to creep back in the game, but overall we stuck with it and played good defense."
Despite shooting only 1-of-6 from the field to open the contest, the Gray Wolves were able to open up a 9-2 lead behind five points from
Christian Wagenhauser (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) and four points from
Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon).
The Lakers (2-4) would climb within 14-11 with 12:30 remaining in the first half, but a quick 6-0 run capped off by a layup from
Julian Egbo (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers) pushed the Gray Wolf lead to 20-11 with 10:43 remaining in the half.
Back-to-back jumpers in the final two minutes of the first period by
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) and Lauf pushed the Lourdes lead to 34-23 at the intermission.
The Lakers came out firing in the second half, pulling within 42-41 with 14:28 remaining in the contest. The game would remain a back-and-forth battle throughout the second half, but the Gray Wolves were able to pull ahead late to seal the 78-64 victory.
Leading 67-56 late in the second half, Egbo tallied back-to-back-to-back layups to help Lourdes extend its lead.
A three ball from Snow with 2:13 remaining in the contest proved to be the dagger as it forced a Wright State-Lake timeout and Lourdes went on to claim the contest.
Byron Taylor led the way for the Lakers offensively, netting a team-high 19 points.
"Their program has a bright future," Gibson continued. "They have a lot of young guys who played some big minutes so you have to give them credit for playing such a good game."
Lauf poured in a game-high 23 points to lead four Gray Wolves scoring in double figures. Snow added 16 points, while Egbo and
Desmond Frazier (Ocala, Fla./Dunnellon) 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Snow added 13 rebounds to complete his second double-double of the year and fifth of his career.
The Gray Wolves (3-1) are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 10 as it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. and takes on Carlow at 1 p.m. at Oakland Catholic High School.
