Madonna Tops Lourdes in WHAC Tournament

Lourdes saw its 2018 season come to an end on Wednesday evening, as the Gray Wolves fell to Madonna in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals 25-20, 26-24, 19-25, 25-18 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

The third-seeded Gray Wolves hit just .114 for the match, committing 29 attack errors, 14 of which were into Crusader blocks.

"We made too many errors at the wrong time," head coach Greg Reitz said after the match.  "We gave away more than a set's worth of points in hitting errors.  We didn't swing for kills late in sets, instead we swung tentatively."

Madonna, the tournament's sixth seed, raced out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set and never trailed while building the early advantage.  Lourdes closed to within two, 20-18, late in the set, but back-to-back errors allowed the Crusaders to retain control.

The Gray Wolves led nearly the entire second set, jumping in front 12-6 and built an 18-9 lead.  Madonna used a 6-1 run to claw back and eventually tied things up at 22.  Lourdes had a set point at 24-23 before the Crusaders scored three straight points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Lourdes kept its season alive in the third.  Trailing 15-13, the Gray Wolves scored four straight points to pull in front, and closed the set with another 4-0 run to earn the win.

In the fourth, Madonna went on a 9-1 spurt to build a 12-5 advantage.  The Gray Wolves tried to battle back, pulling within one three times, the final one coming at 16-15, but the Crusaders answered with six points of their own to secure the win.

Tylar Roberson (Elkhart, Ind./Central H.S.) led Lourdes with 15 kills and 14 digs for her fourth double-double of the year while Monique Oliveira (Rio Branco, Brazil/Americo Rene Giannetti H.S.) added 14 kills.  Carol Goncalves (Brazilia, Brazil/Sagrado Corcacao de Maria H.S.) added 39 assists and 12 digs for her team-leading 17th double-double of the year.   Niki Polce (New Boston, Mich./Huron H.S.) tallied 19 digs to finish every match of the season with double figures while Kailey Dudevoir (Fullerton, Calif./Troy H.S.) registered seven blocks.

Jodie Kelly led Madonna (23-11) with 24 kills and 25 digs as the Crusaders advance to the WHAC semifinals to face Cornerstone on Friday.

Lourdes concludes its season 17-9 overall.
