Despite a slow start and trailing at the half, the Gray Wolf women's basketball team used a big second half to defeat Cornerstone 68-53 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action inside Mol Arena on Saturday afternoon.
"I'm really proud of this team," said head coach
John Kenger following the victory. "We played some of our best basketball of the year today in the third and fourth quarter."
Lourdes got off to a slow start, falling behind 15-9 after one quarter.
Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) needed just two, three-point field goals entering the contest to eclipse 100 career three point field goals. She got within one of the mark after nailing a three-pointer to open the second stanza.
At the 3:39 mark of the second quarter, Miller would nail her second three-pointer of the afternoon to help Lourdes pull within 24-23.
Ramiah Henry (Toledo, Ohio/Waite) would hit a jumper later in the first half and help Lourdes pull within 27-26 at the break.
After Cornerstone (1-12, 0-5 WHAC) opened the second half with a quick score, Lourdes would go on a 9-0 run capped off by a pair of free throws from
Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame) to take a 35-29 lead with 7:10 left in the third quarter.
Holding a 47-40 lead heading into the final quarter, the Gray Wolves scored 11 of the first 16 points in the final period to push its lead to 58-45 with 5:44 left in the contest. Lourdes would continue to widen the gap as it went on the claim the 68-53 victory.
Miller led the Gray Wolf offense with 12 points on an impressive 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, while
Jami Hardy (Perrsyburg, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch) and
Mirandia Green (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) each chipped in nine points.
Keyvona Davis (Columbus, Ohio/South) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Shelby Nyboer paced the Golden Eagles with 16 points.
The Gray Wolves were 21-of-59 (35.6%) from the field, including 7-of-16 (43.8%) from three-point range. Cornerstone finished 23-of-63 (36.5%) from the field, including 3-of-15 (20.0%) from three-point range.
Lourdes won the rebound battle by a 48-37 margin.
The Gray Wolves (5-5, 2-2) return to action in the WHAC on Wednesday as they travel to Siena Heights for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
