Trailing by eight at halftime, Lourdes used a 45-point second half to rally and defeat Aquinas 72-60 on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
Â
"It feels great to finally break through and get a win in the league," head coach
Josh Gibson said afterwards. "I was pleased with our effort and execution in the second half. The first half was more of what we had been seeing with the lack of concentration. We answered the bell in the second half and now need that consistency moving forward."
Â
Lourdes got off to a quick start to tip off the contest as
Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) nailed a three-pointer on the opening possession and
Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall H.S.) hit a jumper to give Lourdes an early 5-0 lead.
Â
After
Evan Vasquez (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) hit a triple to give the Gray Wolves a 19-13 lead, Aquinas answered with a 15-0 run to take a 28-19 lead with 4:01 left in the first half.
Â
The Saints led by as many as 10 down the stretch of the opening stanza before a Lauf basket just before the break pulled the Gray Wolves to within eight, 35-27, at intermission.
Â
Aquinas (2-9, 2-3 WHAC) led by 10, 49-39, with just over 12 minutes to play when back-to-back three-pointers by Jones and Lauf started a 13-0 run for Lourdes. Lauf's old-fashioned three-point play with 7:56 remaining, pushed the Gray Wolves in front 52-49.Â
Â
With the game tied at 54, Lourdes went on another run, this time a 14-2 spurt in less than three minutes, capped with a three from
Bryce McComb (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.), to build a 12-point advantage, 68-56, with under four minutes remaining.
Â
The Gray Wolves maintained a double-digit edge down the stretch to earn their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory of the season.
Â
Jones led Lourdes with 22 points and eight rebounds, making 7-of-8 from the free throw line, including three in the final 1:11 to secure the win. Lauf added 15 points while McComb came off the bench to score 10 more.Â
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Â
DeShawn Lewis and Deric Murray led Aquinas with 12 points each.
Â
Lourdes (7-6, 1-5) will take a week off before returning to action next Saturday as they welcome Michigan-Dearborn to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
