The Lourdes women's basketball team came up just short of securing their third Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory as it fell to Aquinas 73-69 at the Ebeid Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
"We fought hard today and had some bright spots," said head coach
John Kenger following the contest. "We need to pull together as we enter into the second half of the conference season. We have a great group of ladies that play very hard."
The Saints (9-5, 5-2 WHAC) were able to fend off a gritty performance from Lourdes after hitting 5-of-6 free throws in the final three minutes of the contest to claim the victory.
In the first period, Lourdes took control early, racing out to a 5-0 lead behind a layup from
Keyvona Davis (Columbus, Ohio/South) and a three-pointer from
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer). Aquinas would score the next six points to take a 6-5 lead midway through the quarter.
Holding a 15-12 lead late in the first quarter, Lourdes saw Aquinas take the lead after one period after scoring the final five points of the quarter.
The Saints stretched their lead nine points in the second quarter, but Lourdes would fight back and a buzzer-beating three-pointer from
Jami Hardy (Perrysburg, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch) at the end of the half cut the Aquinas lead to 35-34 at the intermission.
The third quarter proved to be a back-and-forth battle, but Lourdes was able to take a 52-51 lead with less than 90 seconds in the quarter after
Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) nailed a three-pointer.
Clinging to a 67-65 lead with just over three minutes in the contest, Lourdes saw its lead slowly disappear. The visitors were able to capitalize at the free throw line on their way to claiming the 73-69 victory.
Hardy led the Gray Wolf offense, tying a career-high with 16 points, highlighted by an impressive 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Semler, Miller and
Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame) each added eight points.
Aquinas was led by a 20-point effort from Michaela Faber, while Hannah Brefeld chipped in 17 points.
The Gray Wolves finished 25-of-56 (44.6%) from the field, including 9-of-15 (60.0%) from three-point range, while the Saints were 27-of-67 (40.3%) from the floor and 4-of-19 (21.1%) from behind the three-point arc.
Lourdes (5-7, 2-4) will take a week off before returning to action next Saturday as they welcome Michigan-Dearborn to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
