Lourdes held a three-goal lead heading into the final seven minutes on Sunday afternoon, but Marian scored four times down the stretch to rally and defeat the Gray Wolves 14-13 at Saint Vincent Field in Indianapolis, Ind.
"This was a tough loss," head coach
Alyssa Shaver said after the game. "It's the type of game that prepares us for conference play, which is what I was looking for during the non-conference schedule. Our defense played extremely solid today."
The first half was tight throughout, with neither team able to lead by more than two goals at any point.
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) and
Tiara Reed (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) both scored in the final three minutes of the half to put the Gray Wolves in front 9-7 at the break.
Ashley Hunt's (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May H.S.) goal with 8:49 to play pushed the Lourdes advantage to 13-10 before the Knights began their rally. Kori Garland tied the contest with 2:11 to play before scoring the game-winner 41 seconds later, her fifth goal of the game.
Long found the back of the cage five times and added two assists on the afternoon for the Gray Wolves while Reed and Hunt each scored three times.
Katherine Garver (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) and
Anna Zofchak (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover H.S.) each added goals as well for Lourdes.
Marian finished with a 36-24 shot advantage on the day while also holding a 36-32 edge in ground balls. The Knights also won 18 of the 29 draw controls.
Hannah Cullis (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) had a game-high eight ground balls and five draw controls for Lourdes while Long added seven ground balls and four draw controls. Long also forced five turnovers defensively.
Garland led Marian (2-0) with her five goals, an assist, and eight ground balls while Julia Robson tallied four goals and three helpers.
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made nine saves in goal for the Gray Wolves while Casey Monahan made six stops for the Knights.
Lourdes (2-1) will return to action on March 9, when the Gray Wolves travel to Ave Maria, Fla. to battle Ave Maria. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m. at Gyrene Field.
