Lourdes struggled offensively in the first half on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center, and was unable to rally over the final 20 minutes in a 67-57 loss to Siena Heights.
Â
The Gray Wolves fell behind early, making just one of their first 17 shots from the floor over the game's opening 14 minutes. The free throw line was nearly as unkind, as Lourdes went just 2-for-7 from the charity stripe during the same time, while also committing seven turnovers.
Â
Siena Heights had an 18-4 lead when
Darriontae Stewart (Cleveland, Ohio/Rhodes H.S.) scored inside to snap the scoring drought, which was more than 13 minutes from the floor. The Gray Wolves were able to pull within 10, 22-12, with two minutes to play before halftime, and had the ball, but were unable to score the remainder of the stanza and the Saints extended their lead to 26-12 at the break.
Â
Lourdes scored the first six points of the second half to pull within eight, 26-18, three minutes into the second half. After Siena Heights pushed its lead back to 14, Lourdes went on a 9-2 spurt to close to within seven, 37-30, with 10:40 to play after a steal and score by
Bryce McComb (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton H.S.).
Â
The score bounced between seven and 12 most of the remainder of the half, and was still at 10 with a minute to go when
Evan Vasquez (Delta, Ohio/Delta H.S.) scored and was fouled. A technical to Siena Heights, one of six between the two teams in the game, allowed the Gray Wolves to make two more free throws, and it became a five-point game, 60-55, with 55 seconds to play. Lourdes was unable to pull any closer the rest of the way in suffering the home setback.
Â
Jordan Fabry (Shalersville, Ohio/Crestwood H.S.) was the only Gray Wolf in double figures, scoring 13 points while
Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) added nine points and 10 rebounds while handing out five assists.
