Nine players found the back of the cage for Lourdes on opening night Sunday evening, as the Gray Wolves scored a school-record 22 times on the way to a 22-10 victory over Cleary inside of the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
Â
Tiara Reed (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) scored five times,
Shelby Kellar (Holland, Ohio/Saint Ursula H.S.) tallied four goals, and
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) added three goals as the Gray Wolves won their season opener for just the second time in program history (2016).
Â
"We played a really great first half, and I hope to improve upon our weaknesses that were shown in the second half," head coach
Alyssa Shaver said following her first game on the Gray Wolf bench. "The team as a whole played really well together for our first time on the field."
Â
The Gray Wolves started quickly, scoring nine times in the first nine minutes of the contest. Reed had three goals and Long had two more to break the game open. After the Cougars scored back-to-back goals, Lourdes added four more tallies to increase the lead to 13-2, and would lead by double digits the rest of the way.
Â
Ashley Hunt's (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May H.S.) goal as time expired in the first half gave Lourdes a 16-4 lead at the break as the Gray Wolves outshot Cleary 23-10 in the opening stanza.
Â
In the second half neither team would score more than two consecutive goals as Lourdes maintained its advantage throughout.Â
Hannah Cullis' (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) second tally of the game with under two minutes to play gave the Gray Wolves their final record-setting goal, surpassing the 21 goals Lourdes scored at Madonna on April 10, 2017.
Â
Lourdes finished with a 38-26 shot advantage in the game, and
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made 10 saves in goal for the Gray Wolves in the victory. Reed had a team-high six ground balls while Cullis controlled six draws.Â
Â
Brooke Graham scored four times for Cleary (0-2) in the loss while Abby Coyne made seven saves between the posts.
Â
Lourdes (1-0) will take to the road on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves travel to Athens, Tenn. to battle fifth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. The opening draw is set for 2 p.m.
