After cold weather prevented baseball the past two days, Madonna swept both games of a doubleheader from Lourdes 8-1 and 9-3 on Monday afternoon in an abbreviated two-game series at Ilitch Ballpark in Livonia, Mich.
Â
No. 22 Madonna took the lead three batters into the opener with a sacrifice fly and added another run in the fourth, an unearned tally started with a two-out error. Another Gray Wolf miscue leading off the bottom of the fifth led to a five-run Crusader inning before the hosts tacked on an eighth run in the sixth.
Â
Lourdes finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth as
Colin Gottschalk (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) reached on a one-out error and moved to second on a ground out. With two outs,
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) registered just the fourth hit of the game for the Gray Wolves to break up the shutout.
Â
Tyler Butzin went six innings on the hill to earn the win (4-1) for Madonna, striking out 10 and allowing just three hits and one walk.Â
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (2-1), yielding all eight runs, six of which were earned, and nine hits while walking four in 5.1 innings of work.Â
Daniel Kruzel (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) came on in relief in the seventh, tossing a scoreless final 2.2 innings, giving up just one hit.
Â
The Gray Wolves jumped in front in the opening inning of game two, taking advantage of three Crusader errors in the inning. Gallo reached on an error that plated
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) and scored himself on a RBI single by
Glen Crabtree (Media, Ohio/Black River H.S.).
Â
Madonna (23-6, 14-0 WHAC) tied the game in the bottom of the first and took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the third. Two more runs scored in the fifth and the Crusaders plated four in the sixth, all after a two-out error started the rally.
Â
Lourdes added one final run in the eighth as Gallo reached on a ground-rule double, moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and scored on a balk.
Â
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) went 3-for-3 at the plate while Stanley also had two hits for the Gray Wolves, which managed eight total in game two.
Â
Taylor Turner earned the win (7-1) on the mound, allowing two unearned runs and seven hits in six innings of work while striking out nine.Â
Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) took the loss (2-3), surrendering five runs and five hits in five innings on the hill.
Â
Lourdes (12-11, 4-7) will remain on the road Tuesday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves travel to Lima, Ohio to battle Ohio State-Lima. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at Biddle Field for the make-up of a doubleheader that was postponed on March 21 due to snow.
