A five-run first inning in the opener, and an eight-run fourth in game two proved to be the difference on Monday afternoon, as Lourdes suffered a 9-0 loss to Trinity Christian and a 9-3 setback to Calumet at Sleepy Hollow in Leesburg, Fla.
Â
The Gray Wolves fell behind quickly in the opener against Trinity Christian, as two bunts and a ground out, plated the Trolls opening run. A two-run double, a run-scoring single, and an error followed, allowing the Trolls to open a 5-0 lead.
Â
Trinity Christian (1-4) tacked on three more runs in the third, all via a home run by Melinda Russell, and added its final run on a solo blast by Jamie Budreau in the fourth.
Â
Lourdes managed just two hits against Emili Bell, who went the distance for the victory (1-0).Â
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) led off the first with a single and
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) added a one-out single in the second. Bell struck out six and did not walk anyone in the game.
Â
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), surrendering eight runs, seven of which were earned, and nine hits in three innings.
Â
The Gray Wolves struck first in the opening inning against Calumet. Four singles in the frame, the last by
Sydnee Behlmer (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.), plated Ziegler, but Lourdes left a pair on base in the frame and managed just the one tally.
Â
The game was still a 1-0 contest into the bottom of the fourth, when the Crimson Wave sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight times. The final five runs were unearned following a two-out error, one of four miscues in the game for Lourdes.
Â
Lourdes plated a pair in the sixth, the first on a solo home run by
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.).Â
Oliviah Banister (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon H.S.) added a RBI single to score
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.), but that would be the final run the Gray Wolves would score.
Â
Calumet (2-7) added one final run in the sixth before the Gray Wolves stranded a pair of runners in the seventh to end the game.
Â
Kostick and Stanton had two hits each for the Gray Wolves, which outhit the Crimson Wave 9-8.Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), giving up three runs and two hits in 3.1 innings while striking out four.
Â
Amanda Sandilla went 2-for-2 with three RBI and Marissa Kopp had two hits and two RBI to pace Calumet at the plate. Josselline Monge earned the win (1-2) in the circle, allowing two earned runs while fanning five in a complete game effort.
Â
Lourdes (0-4) will look for its first victory of the season on Tuesday, returning to Sleepy Hollow. The Gray Wolves face Spring Arbor at noon and follow with a game against Trinity International at 2:30 p.m.
