Lourdes scored eight times in the top of the seventh of game one to rally for an 18-15 victory over Grace before defeating the Lancers 6-5 in game two on a walk-off single in the bottom of the fifth in a game called due to darkness at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
Â
"It was an emotional roller coaster with highs and lows today," head coach
Jeremy Snow said after the games. "We battled back from big deficits several times in the opener and were able to reset for game two to earn the sweep. This was a big day for our team."
Â
Lourdes trailed 9-4 in the opener before scoring six times in the fifth to take the lead.Â
Dallas Riggs' (Prescott, Ariz./Bradshaw Mountain H.S.) two-run double tied the game and
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) followed with a run-scoring single to put the Gray Wolves in front.
Â
Grace responded with five runs in the fifth, and took a 14-10 lead into the seventh when Lourdes sent 11 batters to the plate and scored eight times, with the final six runs being unearned.Â
Reilly Walters (Bowmanville, Ont./Bowmanville H.S.) tied the game with a two-out RBI single and
Colin Gottschalk (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) provided the heroics with a grand slam to give Lourdes the lead.
Â
Gottschalk finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate, reaching base five times in the game.Â
Cole Cantelon (Langley, B.C./Brookswood Secondary) had three hits and four runs batted in as well while Walters tallied a three-hit game. Lourdes pounded out 18 hits in the win.
Â
Jake Tucker (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) earned the win (1-0) with 1.2 innings of relief, striking out two, while Josh Tew suffered the loss (0-2), allowing eight runs, only two of which were earned, in an inning of work.
Â
Lourdes plated a pair of runs in the opening inning of game two before Grace (0-10) responded with two in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth to build a 5-2 lead.
Â
The Gray Wolves batted around in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game on a Cantelon single. With darkness approaching, and the fifth inning being the final frame,
Ryan Kroll (Brownstown, Mich./Carlson H.S.) pitched a scoreless top half of the frame before eventually being credited with the win (1-0) in relief.
Â
"Kroll came on for us and really competed today," Snow added. "He gave us a very gusty performance."
Â
In the bottom of the inning,
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) led off with a triple and scored two batters later on Walters' game-winning single.
Â
Walters, Stanley, and Cantelon each had two hits, accounting for six of the Gray Wolves' seven safeties in the game.
Â
Derrick Grass suffered the loss (0-1) for the Lancers, allowing the fifth-inning run.
Â
Lourdes (7-4) will take a four-game winning streak into the Warner Invitational on Thursday. The Gray Wolves will face Mount Vernon Nazarene at 10:30 a.m. at Head Field in Lake Wales, Fla. before heading to Royal Field at 3:30 p.m. to battle host Warner.
