Mark O'Bryant (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights H.S.) scored the game-tying goal in the fourth quarter and tallying the game-winning goal with one second remaining in overtime on Thursday as Lourdes upset seventh-ranked Cumberlands 6-5 at James H. Taylor Stadium in Williamsburg, Ky.
O'Bryant was involved in five of the team's six goals, finishing the game with three goals and two assists. He tied the game with 10:43 to play in regulation, with
Greg Johanning (Tivertson, R.I./Tivertson H.S.) garnering the assist on the only goal for either side in the final period. O'Bryant then provided the victory with his unassisted goal.
Cumberland's scored the only goal in the first quarter before Lourdes scored four of the next five goals before taking a 4-3 lead at intermission. The Patriots scored a pair of goals in the third, setting the stage for the final quarter.
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook H.S.),
Tanner Jaramillo (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.), and
Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse H.S.) all found the back of the cage for the Gray Wolves.
"We had multiple guys rise to the occasion today and the leaders set the tone," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said after the game. "They held each other accountable and hen things didn't go our way they didn't get down. We respect our opponent and are looking forward to getting back onto the field and working on the little things."
Lourdes outshot Cumberlands 37-29 for the game as
Jared Huiskens (Bay City, Mich./Central H.S.) made 10 saves for the Gray Wolves.
Jake Noel (Knoxville, Tenn./William Blount H.S.) won nine of his 13 faceoffs in the game.
Caleb Elerick scored three goals for Cumberlands (3-2) while Will Settle made 13 saves in the cage.
Lourdes (3-1) will host Montreat on Saturday afternoon for the Gray Wolves' home opener. The opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
