Lourdes scored five times in the top of the seventh inning on Wednesday evening to battle from behind, but Indiana Tech pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth defeat the Gray Wolves 13-12 at Pacesetter Park. Game two was postponed due to rain.
Trailing 11-7 heading into the seventh, Lourdes, the visitors in the contest, rallied with two outs.
Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) beat out an infield single with the bases loaded to score the first run and
Lindsay George (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood H.S.) cleared the bases with a double to tie the game.
Jimi McNew (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) then put the Gray Wolves in front 12-11 with a single.
Indiana Tech tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice and won it in the eighth, as two runners reach via errors and the winning run crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly.
The Warriors struck first in the game with two runs in the opening inning before Lourdes responded with four in the second, including two on a triple by
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.). Run-scoring singles by
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) and Waters in the fourth increased the lead to 6-2.
Shylee Schmeltz (Northwood, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) drove home the Gray Wolves' seventh run in the fifth inning before Indiana Tech scored eight times in the bottom of the inning, including a grand slam by Kelsey Reinhardt.
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) went 4-for-5 at the plate for Lourdes while Genzman and Waters had three hits each as part of an 18-hit attack.
Amanda Shonka went the distance in the circle for the win (3-6) for the Warriors, striking out five.
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (4-6), tossing the final 1.2 innings for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes (11-12, 3-2 WHAC) and Indiana Tech (6-25, 4-5) will make up their second game on Thursday evening, approximately 8 p.m. at Pacesetter Park. The Gray Wolves host Rochester (Mich.) in a doubleheader prior to that game, beginning at 4 p.m.
