Lourdes swept both ends of a doubleheader against Rochester (Mich.) by scores of 3-1 and 5-1 on Thursday evening at Pacesetter Park before dropping the final game of the night 7-4 to Indiana Tech in a make-up of Wednesday night's postponement.
Â
Against Rochester, the Warriors managed just one hit in each game against Gray Wolf hurlers.
Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) struck out two and did not walk anyone in the opener, allowing just one unearned run in the fourth inning, aided by three Gray Wolf errors.
Â
Lourdes scored a pair of unearned runs to take the lead in the second, as
Jimi McNew (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) singled home one and
Shylee Schmeltz (Northwood, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) delivered a sacrifice fly for the other.
Â
Leading 2-1 in the fifth, Kostick led off with a double and moved to third on
Kim Waters' (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) single before
Lindsay George (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood H.S.) delivered the sacrifice fly.
Â
Waters and McNew each had two hits as Lourdes managed six in the opener against Brooke Snyder, who took the loss despite allowing just one earned run.
Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) spun the one-hitter in game two, a lead-off double in the fourth that eventually scored following a Lourdes error.
Â
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the second though as
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) produced a two-run single.
Â
After the Warriors got the run back in the fourth, Lourdes added three insurance runs in the fifth.Â
Megan Motte (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) reached on an error, plating one run and McNew added a two-run single.
Â
Ziegler, George, and
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) each had multi-hit efforts for Lourdes in game two as part of a nine-hit attack.
Â
Gallaher struck out three and walked five in the win (5-6) while Karlie Kline took the loss (0-1), allowing all five runs in 4.1 innings of work for Rochester (6-25, 0-14 WHAC).
Â
In the finale against Indiana Tech (8-26, 6-6), Lourdes scored first on a RBI single by Ziegler in the top of the third. After the Warriors went in front 2-1 after three,
Taylor Tafelski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) put the Gray Wolves back on two with a two-run double.
Â
The Warriors took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three times with two outs to build a 5-3 edge. Waters plated Lourdes' fourth run in the fifth with a run-scoring hit, but that would be the final run of the game for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Indiana Tech tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
Â
Waters went 3-for-4 while Genzman had two hits in the finale against Ashley Alvey, who went the distance for the win (1-7). She did not allow an earned run while striking out seven.
Â
Kostick took the loss (6-4), surrendering 11 hits while fanning five.
Â
Lourdes (13-13, 5-3) will take to the road on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle Concordia (Mich.). First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the CUAA Softball Field.
