Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Quick Start Lifts No. 6 Siena Heights Past Lourdes

Sixth-ranked Siena Heights scored four times in the game's first four minutes on Wednesday, and despite Lourdes rallying, the Saints came away with a 16-15 victory over the Gray Wolves at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich.

"We let them go on a four-goal run in the beginning which really put us in a hole to start the game," head coach Alyssa Shaver said afterwards.  "We battled back multiple times, but we just didn't come out on the winning end.  The team fought hard until the end against a ranked team."

After the Saints built their quick 4-0 lead, Lourdes battled back, tying the game at five following Shelby Kellar's (Holland, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) goal with 16:57 remaining before halftime.  Siena Heights answered with four of the next five goals to retake a three-goal lead, 9-6, before the Gray Wolves were able to pull back within one at halftime when Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) scored with 58 seconds to play before the break.

Siena Heights scored the first goal of the second half but again Lourdes answered.  Tiara Reed (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) tallied back-to-back goals and Long put the Gray Wolves in front 13-12 with 22:48 to play.

Again, the Saints responded, scoring the next four goals to rebuild a three-goal advantage, 16-13, with under seven minutes to play.  Long added two late goals for the Gray Wolves to pull within one with four minutes to play, but Lourdes was unable to find the equalizer down the stretch.

Long and Reed each scored six times for Lourdes while Kellar added a pair of goals and Ashley Hunt (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May H.S.) also found the back of the cage.

Jenna Sommerville tallied six goals to pace Siena Heights (12-3, 4-2 WHAC) while Taylor Swartz and Kayla Parks each scored four times.

Lourdes outshot the Saints 43-32 for the game, including 29-28 on goal.  Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made 11 saves for the Gray Wolves while Lizzy Elliott made seven first half stops and Mariah Smythe made six second half saves for the Saints.

The Gray Wolves also held a 29-23 edge in ground balls, but Siena Heights led the draw control battle 21-11.  Reed finished with nine ground balls and seven draw controls for Lourdes.

Lourdes (8-5, 2-2) will close out the home portion of its 2018 season on Friday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves host Aquinas.  The opening draw is set for noon at Wildcat Stadium, with Senior Day activities taking place prior to the game.
