Lourdes celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Pacesetter Park, but Lawrence Tech spoiled the party, winning both ends of a doubleheader from the Gray Wolves 10-7 and 11-4 in eight innings.
Â
Prior to the game the Gray Wolves honored
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.),
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.), and
Taylor Tafelski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.).
Â
In the opener, Lawrence Tech scored unearned runs in each of the first three innings without a base hit, and was within a run heading to the fourth despite Lourdes scoring four in the opening frame. The Gray Wolves batted around in the first, with Gallaher tying the game at one with a RBI single. After a throwing error put Lourdes in front,
Jimi McNew (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) put Lourdes in front 4-1 with a two-run single.
Â
Lawrence Tech took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, only to see the Gray Wolves tie the contest at five following a
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) run-scoring double in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Shylee Schmeltz (Northwood, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) laid down a squeeze bunt in the fifth to put Lourdes in front 6-5 before the Blue Devils answered quickly. A three-run sixth put Lawrence Tech on top and the visitors added a pair of unearned insurance runs in the seventh.
Â
Lourdes scored one in the bottom of the seventh as Tafelski came across the plate on a wild pitch, and the Gray Wolves brought the tying run to the plate with two aboard, but were unable to produce.
Â
Gallaher, Kostick, and McNew had two hits each as Lourdes outhit Lawrence Tech 11-7 in the opener, but five errors, six walks, and two hit batters allowed the Blue Devils to produce their base runners. The Gray Wolves left 11 on base as well in game one.
Â
Sydney Schultz earned the win in relief for the Blue Devils, tossing the final three innings, allowing one run and three hits. Gallaher suffered the loss (5-8), going the distance with only five of the 10 runs she allowed being earned.
Â
Lawrence Tech (17-13, 10-8 WHAC) struck first in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the third and adding two more in the fifth to build a 4-0 advantage.
Â
The Gray Wolves cut into their deficit in the sixth, as
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) doubled home a pair to pull within two. In the seventh,
Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) tied the game at four with a two-out, two-run single to right, forcing extra innings.
Â
The Blue Devils sent 11 batters to the plate in eighth, scoring seven times while taking advantage of four Lourdes errors to earn the victory.
Â
Waters had three hits and Ziegler had two more for Lourdes among their eight total hits in the nightcap.
Â
Shirling suffered the loss (2-4) in relief, tossing the final four innings. Schultz earned her second win (4-2) of the day, pitching the final 2.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Â
Lourdes (13-17, 5-7) will take to the road on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Livonia, Mich. to battle Madonna. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m. at University Field.
