Upcoming in Gray Wolves Softball: Lourdes closes the 2018 regular season with four WHAC doubleheaders this week, making up previous postponements. The Gray Wolves travel to Madonna, Siena Heights, and Cornerstone before hosting Northwestern Ohio in the regular season finale on Saturday.
Head Coach Jo Ann Gordon: In her sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jo Ann Gordon has a 81-145 (.358) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In her 16th season overall as a head softball coach, Gordon has a 233-433 (.350) career mark. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Madonna is 11-1 all-time against Lourdes beginning April 14, 2013, and has a 4-0 series edge in Livonia, Mich. The Crusaders swept last year's meetings 8-0 and 1-0 in 10 innings at Pacesetter Park. Siena Heights holds a 7-6 series edge over Lourdes beginning April 21, 2013 and are 3-1 against the Gray Wolves in Adrian, Mich. The two teams split last year's meeting at Pacesetter Park, with Siena Heights taking the opener 13-8 before Lourdes won game two 8-7. Lourdes and Cornerstone are 6-6 against one another dating back to March 4, 2013. The Gray Wolves are 0-2 all-time on the Golden Eagles' home field. Last year Lourdes won 5-3 and 16-0 at Pacesetter Park. Northwestern Ohio is 8-2 against the Gray Wolves dating back to April 5, 2014. Last year the Racers won 4-2 and 6-1 in Lima, Ohio. The series is tied 2-2 at Pacesetter Park.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes rallied with five runs in the seventh to force extra innings against Indiana Tech on Wednesday before falling 13-12 in eight innings.
Marissa Kostick went 4-for-5 in the loss. The Gray Wolves swept a doubleheader from Rochester (Mich.) 3-1 and 5-1 on Thursday.
Kim Waters and
Jimi McNew had two hits each in the opener while Kostick picked up the win. Brook Gallaher earned the win in game two while McNew and
Alyssa Ziegler both drove home two runs. Thursday night Lourdes then fell 7-4 to Indiana Tech, despite three hits from Waters. Saturday the Gray Wolves fell at Concordia (Mich.) 5-4 in eight innings and 8-5.
Oliviah Banister had three hits in game one and Ziegler had two RBI in game two. Lawrence Tech downed Lourdes 10-7 and 11-4 in eight on Sunday. McNew had two RBI in game one and Waters had three hits in game two.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders have won three straight after sweeping Rochester (Mich.) 8-4 and 4-3 on Sunday. Kattie Popko is hitting .420 to lead Madonna with 19 RBI while the Crusaders are batting .294 as a team. The pitching staff sports a 2.85 earned run average, led by Madisen Henry, who is 10-7 with a 2.59 ERA.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints snapped a three-game losing skid on Sunday, winning game two against Aquinas 7-3. Racquel Ward is hitting .435 with six home runs and 22 RBI for a team batting .344 overall. The pitching staff sports a 4.39 ERA, led by Ward, who is 13-5 with a 2.73 ERA in the circle. Siena Heights travels to Cornerstone Monday before hosting Lourdes.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles enter the week having swept Rochester (Mich.) 6-0 and 7-1 on Saturday. Sierra Sanchez leads Cornerstone batting .327 while the Golden Eagles are hitting .263 overall as a team. Rachel Younts is 6-4 with a 2.07 ERA in the circle for a pitching staff that sports a 2.75 ERA overall. Cornerstone hosts Siena Heights, Aquinas, and Concordia (Mich.) before entertaining Lourdes.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers enter the week having dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Aquinas by 3-1 scores on Saturday. Kendall Benning is batting .440 to lead a UNOH offense that is hitting .335 overall. In the circle, Aubrey Brunst is 11-6 with a 1.74 ERA for a staff that has a 1.84 ERA overall. Northwestern Ohio travels to Lawrence Tech and Rochester (Mich.) and hosts Indiana Tech before visiting Lourdes.
Quite a Week for Waters: Kim Waters reached base safely in all eight games for the Gray Wolves last week. The freshman batted .556 (15-for-27) with six runs scored while also driving home five runs. She added three walks and was hit by a pitch for a .613 on base percentage. On the season, Waters now leads Lourdes, hitting .420.
Gallaher Goes Deep: Brooke Gallaher hit her first collegiate home run on Saturday at Concordia (Mich.) in a pinch-hitting role to tie the game and force extra innings. Gallaher had four hits in seven at bats last week overall.
Extra Innings: Lourdes entered the week having played just two extra inning games this season, but went beyond seven frames three times in a five-day span this past week. The Gray Wolves are now 2-3 in extra inning games on the year and 4-12 all-time in program history.
Let's Play Three: Because of Wednesday's postponement of game two against Indiana Tech, the Gray Wolves played three games on Thursday. It marked just the second time in program history Lourdes played three games in a day (May 6, 2016, WHAC tournament).
This and That: Shylee Schmeltz is the only Gray Wolf to start all 30 contests ...
Taylor Genzman and
Alyssa Ziegler enter the week on six-game hitting streaks ... the Gray Wolves have committed 79 errors this year leading to 61 unearned runs ... 13 different hitters have at least two multi-hit games this year.
