Lourdes began the final regular season series of the season on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Rochester (Mich.) at Mercy Field.
Â
"I'm very proud of the team today," head coach
Jeremy Snow said afterwards. Â "We battled some tough conditions today and found a way to manufacture enough runs to win. Â We had great energy from the dugout for a full nine innings and the starters fed off that."
Â
Matt York (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) went the distance, scattering nine hits while allowing just the one run for the victory (4-3). The senior struck out nine and walked three in the complete game effort.
Â
"
Matt York pitched great, but he's been doing that all season," Snow added. Â "He battled the poor mound conditions extremely well and got locked in after a couple stressful innings early. Â We are going to need a couple more performances like that to keep our postseason hopes alive."
Â
George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) and
Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.) jump-started the offense in the third, as Pastor led off with a single and scored on Gallo's triple.Â
Glen Crabtree (Medina, Ohio/Black River H.S.) plated Gallo one batter later on a groundout.
Â
After the Warriors cut the Gray Wolves' lead in half with a run in the fourth, Lourdes tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.Â
Devin Stanley (Euclid, Ohio/Saint Edward H.S.) singled to lead off the frame and took second on a wild pitch. Pastor followed with a run-scoring single and eventually scored himself on a sacrifice fly from Crabtree.
Â
Pastor finished the game 3-for-4 while Stanley and Gallo had two hits each as Lourdes managed 10 total on the afternoon against Christopher Owen, who went the distance in the loss (1-7). He also struck out nine and walked one.
Â
Lourdes (20-21, 11-15 WHAC) and Rochester (5-35, 4-21) will close out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader at Mercy Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. with Senior Day activities taking place between games. The Gray Wolves need a pair of victories to qualify for the WHAC tournament for the first time in program history.
