For the second straight game against an NAIA top-five program Lourdes was within a goal with a minute to play, but the Gray Wolves were unable to find the equalizer on Saturday evening, suffering a 14-11 setback to third-ranked Indiana Tech at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
"This was another game of ups and downs and the guys hustled and played hard the entire time," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said after the game. "We are proud of the way they battled the entire game and we are looking forward to the next game."
Â
The seventh-ranked Gray Wolves and Warriors were close throughout the entire contest, with neither team leading by more than two goals until the final minute. Indiana Tech struck with the first two goals before
Greg Johanning (Tivertson, R.I./Tivertson H.S.) scored twice within a minute to even things at two. After the Warriors retook the lead,
Mark O'Bryant (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights H.S.) pulled Lourdes even at three with six seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Â
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook H.S.) and O'Bryant put Lourdes in front 7-5 early in the second period, only to see the Warriors answer, tying the game on a goal by Jace Childs as the halftime horn sounded.
Â
Campbell's second of the game put the Gray Wolves on top early in the third, before Indiana Tech scored four of the next five, with the exception being O'Bryant's third tally of the night.Â
Casey Hilfinger (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) made it a one-goal game late in the third before Indiana Tech pushed the lead back to 10-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Â
D.J. Harris (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg H.S.) and Johanning scored 37 seconds apart early in the fourth, tying the game at 10 with 11 minutes to play. Will McKinney responded for Indiana Tech (9-0, 3-0 WHAC), scoring twice to put the Warriors in front for good with 5:09 to play.Â
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.) made it 12-11 with 4:16 to play, and the game stayed a one-goal contest until the final minute when McKinney added two insurance goals, giving him six for the game.
Â
Shots were even 35-35 for the game, and Lourdes held a 25-20 advantage on goal. Evan Schuster made 14 stops for the Warriors while
Jared Huiskens (Bay City, Mich./Central H.S.) made six saves for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Indiana Tech held a 31-24 edge in ground balls, with
Collin Miller (Royal Oak, Mich./Shrine Catholic H.S.) collecting four for the Gray Wolves. Miller also won 7-of-11 face-offs as Lourdes finished with a 14-12 edge in that category.
Â
Lourdes (6-4, 0-3) will take to the road for its next two games, beginning on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle Concordia (Mich.). The opening face-off is set for 4 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
