Lourdes took the opening set from Siena Heights on Friday evening, but it was the Saints that came away with a five-set victory, defeating the Gray Wolves 23-25, 25-22, 27-25, 14-25, 15-10 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
"This was a very disappointing loss," head coach
Greg Reitz said afterwards. "We didn't play well enough to win except in one set tonight. We are making way too many unforced errors for this point in the season."
Lourdes outhit the Saints .180-.122 for the match and outdug Siena Heights 103-88, but committed eight service errors to just three for the visitors.
Kennedy Ames (Milan, Ohio/Edison H.S.) led Lourdes with 17 kills and hit .267 while
Kylee McBride (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) added 14 kills.
Megan Vayansky (Pickerington, Ohio/North H.S.) handed out 34 assists.
Defensively,
Alli Plasencio (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) had a match-high 25 digs while
Angelica Dippold (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) added 23 more.
Kailey Holm (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek H.S.) added 16 digs while
Michaela Eisenhauer (Castalia, Ohio/Margaretta H.S.) tallied four blocks.
Trailing 7-6 in the opening set, Lourdes scored four straight points to jumpstart a 9-2 run, putting the Gray Wolves in control. The Saints pulled within one late, 24-23, but an Eisenhauer kill closed out the stanza.
Lourdes led 15-12 in the second set before Siena Heights went on an 8-2 run to pull in front on the way to evening the match. The Gray Wolves led nearly the entire third set as well, holding a 22-18 advantage before the Saints rallied for the win.
The Gray Wolves never trailed in the fourth set, hitting .424 with just one error, on the way to forcing the decisive stanza. An early 9-2 run put Lourdes in front 13-5 as the hosts evened the match.
In the fifth, Siena Heights scored four of the first five points before a 7-2 run by the Gray Wolves put Lourdes in front 8-6 as the two teams switched sides. The Saints scored the next five points though to seize control and closed out the five-set victory.
Janel Ruhlman led Siena Heights (8-13, 5-9 WHAC) with 20 kills and 11 digs while Grace Polomcak had 13 kills. Anna Tartarian had a team-high 24 digs defensively for the Saints.
Lourdes (10-13, 7-8) returns to the road on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves head to Livonia, Mich. to face Madonna. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside The Activities Center.
