Clif Snow's (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown H.S.) free throw with two seconds remaining lifted Lourdes to a 65-64 victory over 23
rd-ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon inside the Schaefer Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Â
The victory is the Gray Wolves' first against a NAIA top-25 foe since Feb. 18, 2015 when Lourdes defeated fourth-ranked Davenport, snapping a string of 27 consecutive losses to ranked opponents. The win is Lourdes ninth all-time against a top-25 team.
Â
"We knew what they wanted to do and we executed the game plan," head coach
Dennis Hopson said afterwards. "We still have some things to clean up but I thought we played with great toughness today."
Â
The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener for both schools saw eight ties and 11 lead changes.
Â
Indiana Tech took a six-point lead, 33-27, into halftime before Lourdes made a second half comeback. The Gray Wolves scored the first eight points of the second stanza to forge into the lead, part of a 17-4 run to start the second half. Snow's three-pointer gave Lourdes its largest lead of the game, 44-37, with 13:35 to play.
Â
The Warriors responded, cutting into the lead before tying the contest at 49 with under 10 minutes to play. Another three by Snow, who was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half, put Lourdes back on top by four, 60-56, heading into the final minutes.
Â
Little Anderson (Toledo, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) made two free throws to extend the advantage to six at the 2:41 mark, but the hosts responded yet again. Three-pointers by Jeremy Luciaini and Cory McKinney, the latter with 32 seconds to play, tied the game at 64.
Â
Snow missed a triple on Lourdes' final possession, but got his own rebound and was fouled. After missing the first of two, he made the second and the Gray Wolves withstood a final attempt by the Warriors to secure the upset.
Â
Snow led all scorers with 28 points, including six threes, while
Julian Egbo (Toledo, Ohio/Rogers H.S.) added 10 more. Lourdes shot just 39.7% from the field, but took care of the basketball, committing just four turnovers.
Â
Josh Kline led four Indiana Tech (2-4, 0-1 WHAC) scorers in double figures with 13 points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.Â
