Lourdes celebrated its home opener and Homecoming weekend in style on Saturday evening, as the Gray Wolves defeated Olivet 40-38 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.

The Gray Wolves limited Olivet to just 29.2% shooting, including just 4-of-27 (14.8%) after halftime, and forced 21 Comet turnovers while picking up their first victory of the season.

"This was a good first step and a great defensive effort," head coach
John Kenger said following the game. "We need to keep growing with every game, but I'm proud of these ladies."

Olivet kept the Lourdes offense in check as well, as the Gray Wolves connected at a 32.7% clip from the field and committed 23 turnovers, but the defense got the stops down the stretch to secure the victory.

The Comets, which were playing the game as an exhibition, led by as many as seven, 15-8, late in the first quarter, and maintained a 25-21 advantage at halftime.

Lourdes battled back in the third period, limiting Olivet to just six points. The Gray Wolves scored the first five points of the stanza, beginning an 11-2 run, taking the lead 32-27 with 1:46 remaining in the quarter.

The Gray Wolves never relinquished the lead the rest of the way, despite their guests cutting the lead to one 36-35, with 3:49 remaining in the fourth. Olivet made a three-pointer with 1:29 to play to pull within 40-38, but Lourdes forced two turnovers and a missed shot down the stretch to secure the win.

Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) finished the game as the only player in double figures for either team, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.Â
Mare West (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) and
Erica Cary (Central City, Ky./Muhlenberg County H.S.) each added seven points, with Cary also pulling down five rebounds.

Hannah Brown led Olivet with nine points.

Lourdes (1-2) will remain home on Tuesday evening, as the Gray Wolves entertain Indiana-South Bend. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
