Lourdes built a halftime lead for the first time this season on Wednesday evening and carried the momentum to a 67-59 victory over Madonna inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for the Gray Wolves' first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory of the season.
Â
"The team worked hard today," head coach
John Kenger said afterwards. "I was very proud of them. I loved to see all the ladies moving the ball and hustling to do the little things."
Â
The Gray Wolves led nearly the entire first quarter before Madonna scored in the final seconds of the period to take a 16-15 lead into the second stanza. Lourdes still trailed by four, 26-22, with three minutes to play before intermission when
Hunter Kershaw (Columbus, Ohio/Westland H.S.) and
Kali Hardy (Perrysburg, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch H.S.) made three-pointers to spearhead a 10-0 run to end the stanza, giving the Gray Wolves a 32-26 lead at the break.
Â
Lourdes scored the first seven points out of the locker room to increase the lead to 13 and the Gray Wolves maintained a double-digit advantage, 49-39, heading into the fourth quarter. The lead swelled 16, 61-45, after
Riley Raburn (Horton, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) made a layup with 3:50 to play. Lourdes then withstood a late 8-1 run by the Crusaders in the final minute to snap its four-game losing streak.
Â
Raburn and Kershaw paced the Lourdes offense with 12 points each, with Raburn making 6-of-8 from the field while coming off the bench. Kershaw grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.Â
Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) added 10 points and four assists.
Â
Paige Boden led Madonna (2-5, 0-2 WHAC) with 16 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks while Hannah Reinhold added 14 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Â
Lourdes (2-6, 1-2) continues WHAC play on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Aquinas. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
