Women’s Basketball Sets Program Wins Record, Defeats Madonna 90-66 on Senior Day

The Lourdes women's basketball team capped its season in style, picking up its school-record 11th victory with a 90-66 triumph over Madonna on Saturday afternoon.

"This was a great team win," said head coach John Kenger following the contest. "We had a lot of good things happen today and I'm proud of that. This was the highest finish in the WHAC we've ever had and also the most wins this program has seen. I'm just glad we were able to get it done on Senior Day."

The Gray Wolves celebrated their four seniors, Samantha Enck (Oregon, Ohio/Clay), Ramiah Henry (Toledo, Ohio/Waite), Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame) and Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) in a pregame ceremony for their efforts at Lourdes.

The seniors responded early as Enck and Miller nailed back-to-back three-pointers and a layup from Jefferson helped Lourdes jump out to a quick 8-0 run to force a Madonna (2-26, 2-18 WHAC) timeout with 8:27 left in the first quarter.

Madonna would score six of the next 10 points to cut the lead to 12-6, but Lourdes responded with a 10-2 run capped by a Sara Semler (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) three-pointer to push the lead to 22-8. Lourdes held a 24-15 advantage after one period.

The visitors were able to cut the lead to 29-23 with 4:44 left in the first half, but Lourdes would stretch its lead back to 35-25 as Miller found Ra'Zhane Newberry (Cleveland, Ohio/Euclid) for a layup with 3:09 left.

Madonna again made a run, this time cutting the lead to 35-32, but Semler hit a fall away jumper late to give Lourdes a 37-32 advantage at the intermission.

The third period was a back-and-forth affair until a 6-2 run capped by an and-one play from Jefferson helped the Gray Wolves extend their lead to 56-44 with 2:40 left in the third period.

Holding a 61-52 lead through three quarters, Lourdes opened the final quarter scoring four straight points to run its lead to 65-52.

A late 10-2 run from the Gray Wolves extended the lead to 84-61 with 3:46 left in the contest, giving Lourdes a comfortable lead. Lourdes would hold on to seal the 90-66 victory.

Miller led Lourdes offensively, tallying 21 points in her final collegiate game. Semler chipped in 14 points and Newberry added 12 points in the victory. Jami Hardy (Perrysburg, Ohio/Cardinal Stritch) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while Jefferson finished with 13 assists, nine points and six rebounds.

Lourdes (11-18, 6-14 WHAC) finished 38-of-87 (43.7%) from the field, including 9-of-33 (27.3%) from three-point range. The Crusaders were 26-of-57 (45.6%) from the floor, including 3-of-10 (30.0%) from beyond the arc.

Lourdes finished in a three-way tie for seventh place in the WHAC standings, but will miss out on the WHAC Tournament due to tiebreaker rules.
